Context
UMR MISTEA (Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics for Environment and Agronomy) is a joint research unit of INRAE and Institut Agro Montpellier. It brings together researchers in applied mathematics, computer science, control theory, and statistics, working at the interface with life sciences (agronomy, environment, microbiology, etc.).
This position is open within the “Dynamical Systems” team, which focuses on the modeling, simulation, optimization and control of biological and environmental dynamical systems. The team develops theoretical approaches and numerical methods, often in collaboration with researchers from other disciplines.
Mission
The recruited engineer will contribute to two main objectives:
- Implement and apply advanced numerical methods on practical case studies involving:
- modeling, simulation, optimization, and control of dynamical systems,
- in the fields of agronomy, environment, and agro-food processes.
- Develop software packages and graphical interfaces to:
- support research valorization,
- make the unit’s scientific outputs accessible to applied partners and non-specialist users (agronomists, ecologists, biologists, etc.).
The work will be carried out in collaboration with researchers and PhD students from the unit.
Required profile
Education
Engineering degree or Master’s degree (Bac+3 to Bac+5) in applied mathematics, scientific computing, or related fields.
Expected skills
- Numerical methods and modeling of dynamical systems (ODEs, PDEs, discrete systems).
- Scientific programming (Python, Julia, MATLAB, R, etc.).
- Ability to work in a research environment, both independently and in collaboration.
- Interest in cross-disciplinary applications and interface development.
Additional appreciated skills
- Knowledge of control theory, optimization algorithms, or machine learning.
- Experience in software packaging, reproducible research tools, or web interfaces.
- Ability to work with researchers from life sciences.
Work conditions and salary
Contract type: Temporary public-sector contract (CDD)
Duration: 12 months
Location: Montpellier, France
Expected starting date: As soon as possible
Gross annual salary: from ~27,000 € to ~36,000 €, depending on experience and qualifications
